Review: Imprisoning a Duel Discord by Louise Findlay

Today I review a short story by the young Mistress of short stories.

Synopsis

The world is in musical order. To maintain balance, a team of Government Agents, named Harmony, track down, experiment on and sometimes kill those who express the music of dissonance. Those like Psycha, a duel Discord of Vyla and Sios; a prime lab rat to Harmony. Being able to disrupt harmony by voice and hands alone makes Psycha far more dangerous than the usual Discord. Will she run into trouble trying to protect her boyfriend, Caleb? Will her desire to destroy Harmony prove fatal for her? What will be left of her if she ever gets captured?

REVIEW

Louise Findlay creates a musical little world in Imprisoning a Duel Discord. If anyone brings music alive it is Findlay. Harmony and discord are given life as opposing forces, but with a twist. Surprisingly you find yourself rooting for discord over harmony as Findlay weaves a little enlightenment lesson into her work.

I loved the set up she created in this short piece. I wished it was longer. I wanted to know more about the Discords and Harmony groups hierarchy, which to me was reminiscent of the Greek gods pantheon.  The battle between the Harmony's and the Discords is nicely written as music notes and voice is a deadly weapon. This short has a great premise to be expanded. It has all the makings for a hit young adult book series I think. Hint, hint Louise.

BOOK REVIEW: Ancient Voicies: Into the Depths By Allison D. Reid

It has been a long hiatus, but I am back with a great new read to check out. Without further ado here you go!

Ancient Voices: Into the Depths by Allison D. Reid.

Synopsis

The Kinship rides victorious into the small village of Minhaven, just in time to celebrate the Winter Festival. Their leader, Glak, brings with him both hope and spoils from battle, but also some distressing news. Though Minhaven's greatest threat has finally been defeated, a new one is emerging to take its place.

The enemy Glak describes has not been seen in hundreds of years, yet somehow it has been haunting Elowyn’s dreams. Has Braeden’s cruel reach followed her from Tyroc’s troubled borders into this remote wilderness? If so, there is no place left to run, and the Kinship is preparing to fight an enemy more sinister and powerful than they can possibly imagine.

Past becomes present, as prophecies long buried continue to emerge, revealing their truth to the coming generation. The Era of Peace has ended. The Era of Awakening has begun. While Morganne seeks guidance from the crumbling pages of ancient tomes, Elowyn tries to find her place within a community for the first time.

Despite the impending danger, Morganne and Elowyn decide to make their stand with the people of Minhaven. As they plunge into the depths of history, prophecy, the wilderness, love, fear, hope, faith…the girls begin to learn more about who they are, and who Aviad is calling them to be.

REVIEW

Ancient Voices: Into the Depths by Allison D. Reid is the thrilling sequel to Allison’s Christian Fantasy Journey to Aviad,(Read my review on Journey to Aviad HERE.) and is a part of the exciting Wind Rider Chronicles. Journey to Aviad was a magical medieval fantasy adventure when I heard about their being a sequel I jumped at the chance to read and review it.

Ancient Voices: Into the Depths continues with our heroines Elowyn and Morganne. They had escaped their earlier trials now ending in a small friendly village of Minhaven. Their trials are not over as the dangers not only threaten them, they threaten the world itself. Past histories start to surface looming with war, darkness, and destruction once again. Is Aviad calling them to take up and fight?

Again, Allison D. Reid’s writing is superb drawing you into her make-shift world. Being Christian Fantasy genre is lost as her writing is just superb transporting you to this mythical world in the likes of J.R.R. Tolkien. Though through watchful reading you can pick up on it. I must confess when you get bummed you have to stop reading to make dinner for you family the author has done a good job.

AUTHOR BIO: Allison D. Reid

Allison D. Reid was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her love for medieval fantasy was sparked by the Narnia Chronicles by C.S. Lewis, which fed both her imagination and her spiritual development. When at the age of thirteen her family moved to Germany, her passion for medieval history and legend only increased, and she found herself captivated by the ancient towns and castles of Europe.

Allison returned to the United States to study art and writing at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. She earned her B.A. under the tutelage of the well-renowned and prolific writer Andrew Salkey, a student of her other great inspiration, and the father of fantasy, J. R. R. Tolkien. After graduating from Hampshire College, Allison moved to Connecticut. There she got the opportunity to attend seminary and further explore her faith before returning to her home state of Ohio.

Allison now lives in the Miami Valley area with her husband and children. She continues to work on her first published series while taking care of her family, editing for other independent writers, and managing a home business.
