Indie Movie Review: The Hunter's Anthology (2021)

 

Six strangers find themselves trapped in a New York City subway by Mac, a mysterious man who claims to be a demon hunter. Insisting one of them is evil, he peeks into their souls discovering five eerie, supernatural tales: a desperate woman goes to a fortune teller, newlyweds discover a creature lurking outside their apartment, a young man visits an insane asylum, bullied twins discover a wish-granting coin and a man lusting after a co-worker discovers a magic potion shop. It's then up to Mac to solve the mystery and destroy the demon amongst them.

REVIEW

 Reminding me of one of those late-night syndicated T.V. shows I used to watch in the 90s (Forever Knight anyone), The Hunter's Anthology series is an enjoyable watch. As the premise states, six strangers get trapped on a subway, and one is a demon. It is there that our demon hunter Mac (Taylor August) must peer into each one's soul to find which one is the demon. Each episode is Mac looking into a soul as each is connected to a supernatural tale. 

There are five episodes, each highlighting a passenger. 

 

Episode 1: We meet Tabitha (Janna Bossier) and her story in  The Fortune Maker.

Written and directed by Robert Smithline, The Hunter's Anthology is an easy one-day bing watch, and each episode pulls you into the next, leading to its twist ending. Benjamin Wolf, leader on cinematography, does an upscale job for indie filmmaking, and everything is shot and angeled smoothly and beautifully, making it very lovely to watch. 

 

 

Acting-wise, Taylor August's cowboy demon hunter motif, while some may say it is cliché, it grows on you. August brings a mystery yet vulnerability to his role as Mac well. Hey, if you hunt demons all your life, you'd become a grizzled cowboy loner too. Plus, he is gorgeous so whoever dislikes him are jealous haters. Anyway!

 However, Eric Colton (Rod) and Cole Taylor (Steven) also shine in their roles, as does the rest of the main ensemble cast and co-stars. Yoko Hyun (Mooni) in Lust Potion Number Who Care is flamboyant and hilarious in her banter with Eric Colton's Rod.

In the end, I would be interested in a season 2 following more adventures with the smoldering Hunter Mac.

INDIE MOVIE REVIEW: Motivational Growth ( 2013)

 

Ian Folivor, a depressed and reclusive 30-something, finds himself taking advice from a growth in his bathroom after a failed suicide attempt. The Mold, a smooth talking fungus who was born of the filth collecting in a corner of Ian's neglected bathroom, works to win Ian's trust by helping him clean himself up and remodel his lifestyle. With The Mold's help, Ian attracts the attention of a neighbor he's been ogling through his peephole, Leah, and he manages to find a slice of happiness despite his unnatural circumstances. But Ian starts to receive strange messages from his old and broken down TV set that make him realize that The Mold may not be as helpful as it seems to be, and strange characters combined with stranger events cast Ian's life in the shadow of an epic battle between good and evil that Ian is only partially aware of.

When low, down, and out, Ian decides to end it all after the death of his T.V. Kent; his attempt ends in debauchery, waking up to find the corner of mold (Voiced by the infamous Jeffery Combs) growing in his bathroom talking to him. The Molds got plans, Jack…yes The Molds got plans…to motivate Ian's life back into shape, that is! Hey, when life deals you lemons, why not take advice from a smooth-talking fungus which grows a mushroom out of it and asks you to eat it. 

 

Winner of the 2013 Atlanta Horror Film Festival for Best Feature and Best Feature winner at the 2013 Boston Science Fiction Film Festival Motivational Growth is absolute brilliance taking you on a dark fungal acid trip. Plus, giving the term, "I've got a mold problem." A whole new meaning.

Written and directed by Don Thacker, Thacker delivers Indie film at its finest. Motivational Growth is just pure enjoyment to watch. Sure Thacker leaves us with many questions, but The Mold smoothed it all over. Enjoy the showman, enjoy the show. Speaking of The Mold (voiced by the illustrious Jeffery Combs), he does not steal the film; Adrian DiGiovanni (Ian Folivor), our protagonist, our narrator does. Our narrator has to captivate, and Adrian's Ian does. He draws you in before he even speaks with his blank disheveled appearance. When he does speak you are wholly invested in Ian Folivor and his journey. This is all thanks to the amazing camera work the camera team does. Every shot, scene, and twist, that journeys us into Ian's mind-mucking fun that becomes Ian's horror mold-infested world.

Speaking of The Mold, whom I oddly found cute and charming. I would definitely buy The Mold plushie puppet if one were made. It is done by Puppeteer Midan Crosby and animatronic designer Andy Hosmer and, of course, the rest of the special effect and puppeteer crew, who I thought did a fantastic job creating The Mold and bringing it ready for its screen time. He is reminiscent of special-effects creature features of the '80s, and it fits very much in with the 80's vibe Motivational Growth gives off. Being a child of the 80s, this only made me love Motivational Growth more. It is now available to buy on Blue-Ray and DVD  Motivational Growth is sure to be a cult classic fave.

BOOK REVIEW: The Silicon Gambit (Amy Radigan Thriller) by Isabella Steel

REVIEW

The Silicone Gambit is an amazing political thriller that will have you gripping your pages or gripping your Tablet. Steel is a book weaving mistress and she does not miss a beat.

We open to James Quinn an Oceanside Harbor regular who out of friendship meets up with a college Christ Rodgers to help him collect water samples around a certain section of water. When both are nearly blown to kingdom come Steel has our attention. We then shift to political stuff and the gruesome death of a foreign reporter. Insert SVU dunt dunt music here. 

We then meet hard-nosed reporter Amy Radigan who is led to report on a possible pollution scandal in those same seawaters that may have political ties. This information can only add to the already political scandal that is brewing in the White House that could cripple the whole U.S. economy. Sounds headache-inducing but Steel story weaver goddess blends it all together and you are like dang this is getting good!

 For one Steel creates great characters and does brilliant complex storytelling that is easy to follow. Especially if you are new to this political thriller genre world. While not a political enthusiast Steel still manages to hold your attention by writing strong relatable characters that you want to invest in and just great simple storytelling, and you want more. If you love political thrillers check out The Silicon Gambit.

A sucker for a good witch tale Pungo: A Witch’s Tale delivers that satisfaction. Based on actual history, there is actually a true Pungo, Virginia, and the “Pungo Witch” did exist. Her name was Grace Sherwood, and she was the last person to be tried as a witch ever in Virginia. In 2006 she was pardoned by former Virginian Governor Tim Kaine, who was mayor at the time. Her story is quite remarkable and should be looked up and read. Written and directed by Phillip J. Cook, he takes this tasty morsel of history and weaves a part fantasy, part horror, with a dash of part sci-fi tale of an adventure to watch, and it kind of works.

We open in 1706, where the original Grace Sherwood (Cathryn Benson) is being tried by water and accused of being a witch, which does not bode well for our Grace. We then shift to the present, where we meet Grace’s descendant, also named Grace Sherwood (Also played by Cathryn Benson), who has inherited the old Sherwood family home from her great aunt. When she hires two handymen Bud Hayes (Mark Hyde), a former navy seal who is traumatized by the drowning of his teen daughter, and his partner Sam Dixon (Matthew Sharpe), an ex-paramedic who got relieved of duty, come to help with the repairs strange things, of course, start to happen. First to Bud and Sam and then to Grace. A bit unnerved, they continue till a crazy storm blow through only to find themselves in the same place but at different time. In flashbacks, we learn more about what happened to Grace’s ancestor and why she is the “Pungo witch.” Our crew then gets attacked by giant wood golems and crazy woodmen as Grace gets taken. Bud and Sam must now put their haunted past behind to save their client.

Visually Pungo: A Witches Tale is impressive, especially for an indie film. Cook acts as the cinematographer as well, having won numerous awards for his visual special effects and film work, so it is no surprise Pungo looks beautiful and he did it all on an indie budget of $20,000. Is it Hollywood ILM magic standard? No, but for indie, it is stellar, in my opinion. I often got lost in the film's visuals instead of the story.

As for performances, the cast does a fair job. Cathryn Benson shines better as “witch” Grace than modern Grace getting to really ham it up. Mark Hyde as haunted ex-Navy Seal turned handyman Bud Hays plays him stoic and likable against Matthew Sharpe’s goofy bumbling Sam Dixon, creating a nice buddy dynamic. You can’t help but like them and enjoy going on the adventure with them, which Pungo: A Witch’s Tale is.

INDIE MOVIE REVIEW: AS THE EARTH TURNS (2019)

  

A 1938 silent sci-fi film never released by a 20-year-old filmmaker in Seattle (Richard Lyford) who went on to work for Disney and direct an Award-winning Academy film (The Titan). Well-known composer/producer Ed Hartman (The Blind Side, The Cold Light of Day) restored, composed, and produced the film bringing it back to life to be seen. Owner of the film estate and stock Hartman has taken the film on the road having it go on to win 134 awards. This Halloween, it was even currently featured on TMC (Turner Classic Movies)! (2021)

Debuting with the catchphrase "80 years in the making, "As The Earth Turns" has been beautifully restored, turning it into a film masterpiece! I often got lost forgetting this film was originally from 1938. It looks so crisp and clean. All behind the restoring this old film deserves accolades and accolades they have earned. The film has been entered into 122 festivals to date and won over 134 awards and nominations combined.  

Being bombarded with modern movies today and with CGI and special effects, As the Earth Turns is a step back in time. An oldie but goodie As The Earth Turns still rocks it out of the park with excellent entertainment value. I loved this film! It shows that special effects don't make a film; it's the storytelling. Lyford (who wrote the piece as well.) was inspired by "The Man Who Rocked the Earth" by Arthur Train and Robert Williams Wood (1915) to tell his apocalyptic war tale.

 A true indie filmmaker, pioneer Richard Lyford, and his camera work were visionary! All future film schools should include Richard Lyford as a filmmaker to study. You could learn a lot from his innovative filmmaking prowess. Making movies was in Lyford's DNA. It was no wonder when this project came across composer and producer Ed Hartman's desk; he hopped on board. 

Not only did Hartman help resurrect this lost film, but he also produced and composed a whole new score for the film, which fits seamlessly in with the era. As a bonus, you can also find a follow-up piece titled "It's Gets in Your Blood," a short documentary on Lyford himself.

 It is a fascinating piece as Lyford basically built a filmmaking empire in his own backyard with just family and friends, having had written 58 stage and screenplays by the time he was 20. In fact, Hartman and 8 Sense production are currently in the works on a biopic piece on the life of Richard Lyford. I can't wait for it! Follow for updates at https://www.astheearthturns.com/.

BOOK REVIEW: Revenge is Reason Enough by Isabella Steel

REVIEW

 In Revenge is Reason Enough, we meet Alex Conway, a husband, and father. His wife has passed not so long ago he now rushes his daughter to the ER with a high fever amidst a government shutdown. What happens later? Well, revenge is reason enough.

After the first heart-wrenching first chapter that sets this book up, I shut the book near tears, not sure I wanted to read the rest. Conway’s pain was my pain. It hurt my heart so much. You know the rest has to be good if an author can do that in just the first chapter. Right? Steel does not disappoint either, especially if you are a fan of political thrillers. Revenge is Reason Enough is an adventurous and action pack read.

I first came across Steel's work in the critically acclaimed Skadegemutc: Ghost Witch, a paranormal horror tale.  Steel does a 180-degree turn with a pollical thriller in Revenge is Reason Enough. While not a particular fan of political thrillers, Steel managed to keep this non-political thriller lover engaged with the plot. It is all thanks to her sensational story weaving prowess (Which she showed in Ghost Witch.), and she is showing it here too, managing to hook a reader no matter what.

I did not quite get that the book is said to be part of the Amy Radigan Mystery. While her character was not the front runner of the novel, it did seem to take part in her world making you wonder how Revenge and Amy Radigan Mystery all fit in.

Either way, Revenge is Reason Enough is an engaging political thriller aimed to entertain and make us think about our own government and its secrets.

INDIE MOVIE REVIEW: The Misadventures of Mistress Maneater (2021)

 We are all things INDIE here and today we are spotlighting on an awesome new rom-com indie film THE MISADVENTURES OF MISTRESS MANEATER 

 Directed by  C.J. Julianus and Written by Lorrisa Julianus.

REVIEW

Meet Ava Moriarty (Lorrisa Julianus), a former genius art historian and now a Diva Dominatrix who wants out. Partnering with her friend Gabe (Shannon Brown) on a business deal, this investment is Ava’s escape to happiness. Ava comes home from a hard day’s work to find her Russian mobster boyfriend (whom she refuses to admit is) is dumping her and wants the money he loaned her to invest with back. Oh, and that money is now gone along with their investor friend Lloyd who died of an unfortunate circumstance.

 Bonus she’s got 28 days to deliver. What’s a girl to do?

When offered to exploit a local priest for precisely the amount she needs, she takes the offer. Ava, though decides to play detective to find out the why. Ava learns though the priest and she are not so unlike each other in this romantic comedy adventure.

 Winner for Best Comedy at the Mile High International Film Festival (2020) and directed by C.J. Julianus, The Adventures of Mistress Maneater is a witty, charming high-end indie film. Polished and smooth, it is easy to watch. Lorrisa Julianus (Ava Moriarty) dominates (pun intended) being cast as the writer of the film as well. While a fun, sweet rom-com adventure on the outside, C.J. Julianus weaves in the message about self-worth and even self-forgiveness. We all see this through the characters of Ava, of course, and Pastor Radovan (Mickey O’ Sullivan). With Radovan, it is seen through his actions. For Ava, it is shown not much through her actions, but more so through her make-up and clothes.  When we first meet Ava, she is black leather red lips and fierce. As the story progresses, her clothing and make-up become lighter and softer, just as Ava is becoming softer and learning her self-worth and finding her happiness.

I am not much of a rom-com fan, but I fell in love with this movie. It was intelligent, quick-witted, and will charm your pants off.  You are grabbed at the first scene and held all the way through. Of course, making a film is a group effect, but having a great cast helps. The cast of Mistress Maneater is phenomenal. It’s the best indie cast I have ever seen so far. Everyone plays off each other, so naturally, helping emersed you in the story to feel and care about everyone.

Book Review: Skadegamutc: Ghost Witch by Ian Conner

 

The Ghost-Witch is one of the scariest figures in Passamaquoddy mythology. It is often said to be born from the dead body of a shaman who practiced black magic. The demonic entity then emerges each night with murder on its mind. It can't be killed but destroyed and temporarily only banished.

Sheriff John Alton has a supernatural serial killer in the Village of Nollesemic Maine. The same one who appears every twenty years. The Two Spears and Four Claws Clans have battled the centuries-old evil that has plagued their clans for generations. A source of great shame for the clans. So much so, that it is never spoken about outside of the tribe.  Now the evil has returned, once again threatening the lives of a young mother and her twin babies.

Maggie Four Claws, Grandma Opal, and the rest of the clans move into action to hunt down and banish the Ghost Witch. Will they find the evil in time enough to banish it and save Rebecca and her babies?

Intertwined with Native American lore Ian Conner weaves a seducing chilling tale that tells the story of the Skadegamutc or Ghost Witch. Conner grabs you at the first page as she sets us up in 16th-century Maine, Onata Village. We are given a tale of a bewitching beautiful Maidan seen by four sisters under the moonlight by the lake. When the Maiden request that they bring newborn twins that are to be born soon into their tribe in exchange for beauty, their tribe becomes alerted, and the Evil is discovered. The Evil is banished but not destroyed; cursing it will return.

Here is our setup for Ghost Witch as Conner takes you from past to present to past to tell this horrifying curse tale of the Ghost Witch. Time jump's confused me, but Conner did it well with some fantastic writing.

Conner's writing is clean, fresh, and straightforward forward, making me gobble up every syllable he writes. Conner ultimately keeps you engaged with every word. 

I love Native American lore, and there have been books and movies based on Native American ghost stories. Conner does not disappoint with his nailing it ABSOLUTELY right!

Oh, and to add to the book's more spookiness, Ghost Witch is actually based on an actual legend associated with the Mikmaq, Maliseet, Passamaquoddy, and Abénaki tribes. Our tribe in our book is called the L'nu'k tribe, which is what the Mikmaq tribe often calls themselves. It means "The People." I did not find if Nollesemic Village existed, but there is a Nollesemic Lake in Maine and a Pequabuck Lake, which is a location in the book. I loved Skadegamutc: Ghost Witch. You will be lured under this book's spell too. Recommend READ!

Having been swept downstream and far away from the dog park, Gibson is forced to lead the trio back to safety. There’s only one way back and it’s through a dark forest with strange sounds and smells. The sun is starting to go down and everybody is tired and scared. But, Gibson knows she has to get her friends back home, despite what, or who, gets in her way.

Tyler didn’t know it, but today was an important day and one that she had been looking forward to for a very long time. Each week, the regular pack at the dog park delegated a dog park ambassador. It was a job that held a very high honour within the dog park community.  Dog park ambassadors were to make sure all the dogs at the park got along, and that all the humans felt welcomed so they would bring their dogs back. As ambassadors, they were to intervene in any disagreements between dogs, explain the rules to the new dogs and puppies, and were to greet the humans to welcome them to the park.

Gibson had been asking to get involved for months now, but the committee always told her they didn’t need any more ambassadors. But finally, her persistence paid off and they agreed to let her start training. Today was her first day.
